I'm a bit dummy at picking up on when men are flirting with me. Usually I wait for the boyfriend to whap me on the arm and go "Oi! Pay attention over there!" when he's spotted someone chucking attention my way.
Quite possibly there's a bunch of men I could have been happily playing with who never got through to me. So, any hints I could think about that would improve my flirting technique?

My near-infallible pick-up line is "So cute, you want to do some stuff?" The reason it usually works is that I use it after I deduce from my partner's non-verbal behavior that they want to do some stuff.

Flirting is a considered a low-pressure way to do the same thing. Even if you're not flirt-blind, you can "not see" a flirt that you don't reciprocate. This is a very low pressure way to indicate interest and a very low pressure way to decline. Contrast that with the flat-out approach. The receiving party can't politely ignore the overture; they must either accept or reject.
The pressure on both parties is much higher, and the initiating party runs the risk of a clear rejection that will affect their future interactions. Unfortunately, understanding the motivations behind flirting does not improve the flirting abilities themselves.
How to show interest in a man?
Bottom line: There are no guarantees in life & if you never stand up for fear of getting knocked down you'll never have the vantage point to view most men's attire the way it was intended. Go out & mingle, if you're "taken in" who cares?
